Warped time lens in temporal imaging for optical real-time data compression

We introduce for the first time the concept of anamorphic temporal imaging and its application to analog data compression in a time lens. Placed in front of a conventional spectrometer, this technique enhances the spectral resolution and the update rate. More importantly, it performs real-time optical data compression to reduce the volume of the generated digital data. Our technique introduces the concept of the warped time lens. We show that a specific class of warped time-to-frequency mapping operations combined with the nonlinear operation inherent in a photo-detector compresses the time-bandwidth product in a temporal imaging system. We employ our newly introduced Stretched Modulation Distribution to design the warp profile. Using this method, the narrow spectral features beyond the spectrometer resolution can be captured and at the same time the output bandwidth and hence the record length is minimized. The reduction in the record length results in higher update rate for the spectrometer without sacrificing the spectral resolution or bandwidth. Our method also benefits from amplitude and phase detection to recover the input complexfield spectrum. By compressing the time-bandwidth product, anamorphictemporal imaging addresses the Big Data problem in such highthroughput instruments.     

Repertoires: A post-Kuhnian perspective on scientific change and collaborative research

We propose a framework to describe, analyze, and explain the conditions under which scientific communities organize themselves to do research, particularly within large-scale, multidisciplinary projects. The framework centers on the notion of a research repertoire, which encompasses well-aligned assemblages of the skills, behaviors, and material, social, and epistemic components that a group may use to practice certain kinds of science, and whose enactment affects the methods and results of research. This account provides an alternative to the idea of Kuhnian paradigms for understanding scientific change in the following ways: (1) it does not frame change as primarily generated and shaped by theoretical developments, but rather takes account of administrative, material, technological, and institutional innovations that contribute to change and explicitly questions whether and how such innovations accompany, underpin, and/or undercut theoretical shifts; (2) it thus allows for tracking of the organization, continuity, and coherence in research practices which Kuhn characterized as ‘normal science’ without relying on the occurrence of paradigmatic shifts and revolutions to be able to identify relevant components; and (3) it requires particular attention be paid to the performative aspects of science, whose study Kuhn pioneered but which he did not extensively conceptualize. We provide a detailed characterization of repertoires and discuss their relationship with communities, disciplines, and other forms of collaborative activities within science, building on an analysis of historical episodes and contemporary developments in the life sciences, as well as cases drawn from social and historical studies of physics, psychology, and medicine.

Transparency and secrecy in citizen science: Lessons from herping

In this paper I will outline a worry that citizen science can promote a kind of transparency that is harmful. I argue for the value of secrecy in citizen science. My argument will consist of analysis of a particular community (herpers), a particular citizen science platform (iNaturalist, drawing contrasts with other platforms), and my own travels in citizen science. I aim to avoid a simple distinction between science versus non-science, and instead analyze herping as a rich practice [MacIntyre, 2007]. Herping exemplifies citizen science as functioning simultaneously within and outside the sphere of science. I show that herpers have developed communal systems of transmitting and protecting knowledge. Ethical concerns about secrecy are inherently linked to these systems of knowledge. My over-arching aim is to urge caution in the drive to transparency, as the concepts of transparency and secrecy merit close scrutiny. The concerns I raise are complementary to those suggested by previous philosophical work, and (I argue) resist straightforward solutions.
